Three Headed Dog

By: Donella J. Loughran

Cerberus is the enormous dog which watched over the entrances of Hades.  He is the son of Typhon and Echidna.  Cerberus is also known as Hell Dog.  He was sent to guard the entrance to prevent apparitions of the deceased from departing the underworld, but letting the dead enter.  Cerberus is described as a three-headed dog with a serpent's tail, a mane of serpents, as well as a lion's claws.  It is said that the three heads either represent the past, present, and future, or birth, youth, and old age. To get passed Cerberus you would have to play music for him to fall asleep so one could sneak passes him.  Cerberus is famous for the story of Hercules.

Fluffy in Harry Potter in is based off of Cerberus in Greek Mythology.  To get passes fluffy you would have to play music for him to fall asleep.  In Harry Potter Fluffy was guarding the trap door to get to the sorcerer's stone.  Fluffy was normally barking ferociously, pretty aggressive, and tremendously tough.  To watch a three minute video on Fluffy please view the youtube clip below.

Some people might feel that Cerberus is an evil dog who works with the devil or hades but he is nice and sweet to the souls that go into hell.  Fluffy could be a sweet, loving person to Hagrid.  But to anybody else he doesn’t like anyone.  I feel that Cerberus and Fluffy are just misunderstood characters but because they look different and act different they could be perceived to mean or vicious.
