From Supernatural

By; Maria Messina
Dean Winchester is one of the main characters from the television show Supernatural. He and his brother, Sam Winchester, are monster hunters who travel the country fighting vampires, demons, werewolves, and etc. When Dean and Sam were children their mother was attacked and killed by a demon, and ever since their father became obsessed with hunting monsters. He taught his sons, especially Dean, how to fight from a very young age. Without a mother and their father always traveling and hunting, Dean took care of Sam. Hunting monsters became their lives. After their father’s disappearance and eventual death, Dean and Sam continued hunting, driving across the country in their black 1967 Chevy Impala.

During their years on the road, the boys faced countless challenges. Dean sold his soul to a demon to save his brother and ended up in hell to be rescued by an angel, Castiel. With Castiel and their father’s old friend and pseudo-father, Bobby, the brothers stopped the apocalypse and saved the world multiple times. During these adventures, Dean faced the death of his brother, who eventually came back from the dead, the death of his close friend Castiel, the death of Bobby, and ended up in purgatory with Castiel. There were times when Dean tried to give up hunting, especially after his brother died and attempted to have a life with the woman he loved and her son. He was eventually pulled back into hunting when his brother returned. Dean’s most resent challenge and struggle has been with the Mark of Cain. He received the Mark of Cain in order to defeat Metatron, a corrupt angel trying to become God, but now the Mark is having its effect on Dean. The Mark does not let its host die, so when Dean died he came back as a demon. Although Sam and Castiel saved him, Dean still feels the urge to kill. While they are searching for a cure Dean is not too optimistic.

Dean Winchester has always felt responsible for everyone in his life. Ever since his father told him to “take care of Sammy,” that’s what he has been doing. Taking care of his brother Sam is Dean’s number one priority. His undying love and protectiveness over Sam may be born out of his loneliness as a child or from wanting his father to be proud of him, as his father rarely ever showed Dean any kind of positive affection. Dean was always careful never to get too close to anyone besides Sam for most of his life. His father was borderline abusive towards him and was always away hunting, so Dean had to grow up fast and take care of Sam. Dean’s lack of a childhood and father figure may be part of the reason Dean is so closed off to other people. Dean is always careful about opening himself up to other people and allowing them into his life. Dean’s emotional unavailability is also caused by the fact that he has lost almost everyone he loved or he had to give up everyone he loved because it was too dangerous for them to be close to him. Although Dean remains closed off to most people, he truly cares about people’s lives, which may be one of the reasons he hunts monsters to save people. Dean does drastic things for the people he loves, and almost always blames himself for the bad things that happen to them. Dean feels responsible for everything that happens to Sam, Castiel, and the others he loves because he feels that he should have been there to protect them. Because of his harsh life Dean has trouble seeing anything positive and has accepted his fate at the hands of the Mark of Cain .Dean has given up on trying to find a cure and has accepted the fact that the Mark will eventually win, and he will become a monster again.
