Michael Myers

Michael Myers is the main villain of the Halloween series. This series consists of ten films encompassing his mass murders in order to get to his real target, his sister. Michael is also referred to as The Shape, The Mid-West Boogeyman, Evil on Two Legs, and most commonly, The Halloween Killer. The first film was released in 1978, directed by John Carpenter, and since then has been known as a classic American horror franchise. Due to popularity, the story base has been turned into novels and comic books as well.

The reason for Michael’s evil turn is unknown except for the fact that throughout his childhood he heard voices telling him to kill. This becomes evident when he is six years old and he was left alone with his older sister on Halloween. Michael watched his older sister and her boyfriend engage in sexual behavior, and when the boyfriend left, Michael stole a kitchen knife, went upstairs and stabbed his sister to death, leaving her there for his parents to find her upon their return. Michael was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and after fifteen years, he managed to escape, initiating a killing spree with the intention of killing the rest of his family and anyone else who got in his way.

Throughout the ten films Michael overcomes many obstacles, and many deaths- coming back every time he is apparently murdered. He continues his manhunt to murder his entire family. His sister Laurie, along with a doctor at the institution, Dr. Loomis, figures out Michael’s plan so for a good bit of the years, they are able to stay one step ahead of him. But it all leads to the end when Laurie ends up falling to her death, kissing the mask of her murderous brother.  To this day, we still do not know if he died from electrocution or if he still walks the same ground.

Some people believe that you are born evil, others believe you learn evil. This is a very debatable topic when it comes to young Michael Myers. One might say that he was just born with the innate need, want and desire to kill. This would clearly explain why he does not die in any situation, whether being stabbed multiple times, shot or falls from multiple story buildings. However, what I believe happened to him was he experienced childhood physical abuse from his father. He began his killing spree at six years old, so something detrimental happened in the significant developmental years prior to that. Although he is quite intelligent in his manhunt and the constant tracking down of his family, he is stuck in his immature way of killing- the same way he did when he was six. Because of his traumatic childhood, he is mentally stuck in the same state that he was in when the trauma occurred. That is why he stops at nothing and for no one and kills everyone in his way.
