Davy Jones
By. Ray Frazer
Davy Jones is one of the main characters in the Pirates of the Caribbean. However, this is not the only work that he is seen in; he appears in Edgar Allan Poe’s King Pest. In the book, Jones is referred to as death. Other books Jones shows up in include Herman Melville’s classic Moby-Dick and Charles Dickens’s Bleak House. He has also appeared in songs such as Paul McCartney’s, “Morse Moose and the Grey Goose” and the Beastie Boys, “Rhymin and Stealin”. In every work that Davy Jones appears in, he takes on the same role as a devil of the sea. Ships and sailors who have died at sea have been said to be doomed to Davy Jones’ Locker.
Davy Jones most famous work is in the Pirates of the Caribbean. He only appears in the second film, Dead Man’s Chest and then returns in the third film, At World’s End. In the films, Jones is the captain of the Flying Dutchman, which takes on the appearance of a ghost-like ship. Jones’ one true love, the sea goddess Calypso, charged him with the duty of carrying souls that died at sea into the next world. After ten years of this duty, Jones would be free and able to join Calypso on land. However, when Jones came ashore Calypso was nowhere to be found. He was unable to deal with the grief, and in response cut out his heart and locked it in a chest; he then buried it on Isla Cruces Island. Jones abandoned his duty and turned his wrath towards sailors of the sea. Jones’ crew is made of sailors who were faced with certain death at sea and instead agreed to a contract that allowed them to serve on the Flying Dutchman for one hundred years. Over time, the crewmen become less human, and continue to take on traits from the sea. Once the hundred years are up the crewmen become a part of the Flying Dutchman.
In the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Davy Jones physical appearance takes on multiple types of aquatic life. His head takes on the appearance of a Cephalopod; this sea creature is similar to an octopus, and the tentacles resemble a long flowing beard. Jones can use these tentacles as if they are another set of hands. He also has a claw acting as his left hand. On his right hand, he has a long tentacle in the place of his index finger, and in place of his right leg is a peg that resembles a crab’s leg. Jones also has a thick Scottish accent that makes him sound tough.
